During his life, James Waring worked as a dancer, choreographer, designer and artist. His choreography ranged from Absurdist, almost Dadaesque happenings, to well researched recreations of bygone years. He maintained his own company for 15 years from 1954 to 1969, and formed "Dance Associates" to present the works of younger choreographers and dancers. He continued to work as a freelance choreographer and designer until his death in 1975. His work Novelty Sweets was re-created by Deborah Lawlor (Lee) for Tasdance in 1983.
