After completing an apprenticeship as a Fitter and Turner, Cameron began training in modern dance and classical ballet in Melbourne. After two years study at the Centre for the Performing Arts in Adelaide, he graduated in 1984 with a certificate in Performance (Dance).

He joined the Tasmanian Dance Company in February 1985. In 1986 he went on to work with various dance and theatre companies and to teach dance at secondary school level. Cameron returned to Tasdance briefly to cover an injury in 1987 before returning full time in January 1989, where he danced until the end of 1990.
