Herb's interest in music has developed through playing in bands, theatre shows, guitar studies with Joe Pass and formal music studies at La Trobe University and the Victorian College of the Arts. He performed Way Back Beyond at the International Music and Technology Conference in Melbourne 1981. His main interest is in contemporary performance and composition. Herb was a foundation member of the Tasmanian Dance Company and was appointed as Composer/Musician-in-Residence with the Tasmanian Dance Company in 1982. Herb has composed numerous works for Tasdance from 1981 to 1984 and again in 1987.
He has worked extensively a freelance composer/musician working in the fields of sound sculpture, video and dance. He has composed for radio and has worked as Production Manager for the Australian National Playwrights Conference in Canberra. He has been involved in various projects, including residencies at Victorian Colleges of Advanced Education, multi arts programmes in collaboration with performance artists Chris Babinskas and Les Gilbert, co-ordination of Music '81' for the Sunshine community, participation as an Artist-in-Schools in the Northern Territory, and assistant to Ros Bandt in establishing Australia's first "Sound Playground" in Brunswick, Victoria.
