Mark Howett gained his initial experience with Perth's National Theatre Company at the Playhouse between 1980 and 1984. During that time he toured the United States and the United Kingdom, with the aid of a Western Australian Arts Council Grant, studying lighting design at Yale University under Jennifer Tipton, with whom he has renewed his acquaintance in 1977 at the Australian Ballet dance program of Rites. He has designed lighting for numerous Australian and overseas theatres, opera and dance companies, including The Australian Opera, now Opera Australia, Queensland Theatre Company, West Australia Opera Company, The Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre (Hong Kong and Jakarta tours) and the Auckland Opera - The Flying Dutchman. Mark designed the lighting for Tasdance's Treasured Island season in 2001.
