Helen Herbertson has a long association with Tasdance having made her first work Solo-Echo for the company in 1981. Helen came to choreography during an extensive career as both dancer and teacher. She has appeared with a range of companies and experimental dance/music/theatre groups from the Queensland Modern and Contemporary Dance Company, Dance Company NSW (later renamed Sydney Dance Company), the Western Australian Ballet and numerous independent projects.
Helen has choreographed works for Contemporary Dance Company (Brisbane), Kinetikos Dance Theatre, One Extra Company, Two Dance Plus, Jolt, Dance North, Centre for the Performing Arts (Adelaide), Australian Dance Theatre, South Australian Opera Company, Magpie Theatre, Dance Works, St. Martins Youth Theatre Dance Group and Tasdance. Her teaching experience is wide and varied and includes movement for actors, dance/music workshops for children and guest lectureships at Rusden College, The Centre for the Performing Arts and the Victorian College of the Arts.
In 1988 she was awarded one of four Bicentennial Scholarships to attend the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in America. In July 1989 Helen was appointed as Co-Artistic Director of Dance Works with Beth Shelton and has been sole director since 1992. Early in 1994, Helen spent three months in the Paris Studio with the assistance of a Travel Study Grant from the Australia Council. To date, Helen has choreographed 6 works for Tasdance.
