Karen Pearlman was appointed co-artistic director of Tasdance with Richard James Allen from 1995 to 1996. Alongside the artistic directorship, Karen also worked as a choreographer and dancer.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) in Dance (1981) from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She is a former member of the Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Company, and Timothy Buckley and the Twisters (New York City). She has been a regular contributor to Real Time, the national arts monthly, as well as delivering papers to the Australian National Playwrights Centre on Movement in Theatre and for Scripts and Self producing - How and Why, the Sydney Writers' Festival on Community Art, the National Capital Ballet School on Dance and Cultural Context, Dance Base on Models for Dance Service Organisations: Five New York Organisations and How They Work and at the National Drama In Education Conference on Reading Dance.
With Richard, she is the author of a special report funded by the Australia Council through the International Theatre Institute. Waking Up In The American Dream: A Report on the Association of Performing Arts Presenters Annual Conference in New York City, 1993, and a Guide 10 US Markets for Australian Performing Arts Groups.
